Winter Lawn Care Practices

Winter Lawn Care Practices

Don’t neglect your lawn during the winter months! It needs your attention!

The cold winter weather is quickly approaching. The winter months are the dormant season for many flower and plants species. Many homeowners are under the impression that there is nothing they can do for their lawns during the winter season. This is a misconception and definitely not the case! If you want to have a lush green lawn when spring rolls around, it is essential that you give your lawn some attention during the winter season! Check out these winter lawn care practices you should be mindful of as the outside temperature begins to plummet!

Lawn Aeration

One of the best things you can do for the lawn is to aerate it. This is the process of removing plugs of soil or disrupting it to allow easier access to nutrients, oxygen, and water. There are two major types of aeration tools on the market (spike aerator and plug aerator). A spike aerator is a machine that is used to poke the ground and is typically a metal fork. A plug aerator on the other hand actually removes cores of soil.

Did you know that late fall and early winter is the best time of the year to fertilize your lawn? Before the ground freezes over, fertilize your lawn thoroughly. This will give the soil the nutrients it needs and will feed the grassroots all winter long.

Clean Your Lawn

It is worth spending some time cleaning items off your lawn before the cold winter weather arrives. Things like furniture, children toys, and logs should be removed from the yard. It is essential to do so before the season’s first snow because this can lead to dead spots. When spring arrives, the grass in these areas will significantly thinner than other areas.

Try To Limit Foot Traffic

If possible, try to limit people from walking on your lawn during the wintertime. Grass that is already thin doesn’t benefit from continually being stepped on. Be sure to let your friends and family members know to stay off your lawn. You will also want to try to keep your sidewalk and driveway clear of snow/ice so people won’t be tempted to step foot onto your lawn.
