5 Summer Landscape Tips

It’s important to follow these landscape tips to maintain your yard for the summer and beyond.

Unfortunately, the warm days of summer don’t mean that you can slack off on your seasonal maintenance and let your landscape fall to the wayside. It’s important that you maintain your landscaping all summer long so that it’s ready for the beautiful fall and the chill of winter. Here are five of our best landscape tips to get your seasonal maintenance out of the way before the next barbecue.

Water, Water Everywhere

The heat continues to go up over the course of the summer in Maryland, so it’s important to make sure that your plants and landscape are properly watered. Take the time to water everything in your yard including flowers, shrubs, vegetables, fruit, grass, and just about everything that needs water to survive. If you planted anything new at the start of the season, take the time to give it extra TLC so that they can deepen their roots despite the heat.

Regular Pruning

Take a walk around your yard while completing your other seasonal maintenance tasks to look for any seasonal plants that seem ready to be pruned or removed for the year. Tulips and daffodils are certainly past their prime by mid-July, so try to gently pull on them. If they offer no resistance, it’s time to pull them out. Clip off the ends of any dead flowers now and you might also be rewarded with a fresh set of blooms before the summer is over.

Take Care of Your Trees

Trees, whether or not you realize it, are also essential elements of your landscape. As the weather gets hotter, they need some of the same attention that your other plants do. If they need fertilizer, don’t be afraid to offer it, along with any additional mulching or watering. Keeping trees healthy is especially important during the summer to prevent damage from summer storms.

Plant Again

Many homeowners and amateur landscapers don’t realize that you can plant again over the course of the summer months. Some spring plants are ready to be taken out of the ground, so why not replace them with summer plants? Check out your local nursery or talk to the experts at Pinehurst Landscape Company about your potential summer planting options.

Keep Up the Good Work

Our best summer landscape and seasonal maintenance tip is this—keep up the good work! Maintaining a landscape is hard work, and if you’ve made it this far, you are doing a great job.
